Emergency Support to River Erosion Victims
SKS Foundation will provide emergency assistance to families affected by river erosion in Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha under a project, ‘Early Response for Riverbank Erosion Affected Communities in Sundarganj Upazila, Gaibandha,’ supported by Start Fund Bangladesh. The project will be implemented in Kapasia and Haripur unions, where river erosion has caused severe losses of homes, farmland, and livelihoods.
This 45-day-long project’s initiative and its planned interventions were briefed to local stakeholders, including UP representatives, NGO representatives, disaster volunteers, local entrepreneurs, potential project participants, and journalists, who were present at the Project Inception Meeting held at the Sundarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s Conference Room on 10 August 2026.
Khondaker Zahid Shorwar, Deputy Director (Development Programs) of SKS Foundation, chaired the meeting. Md Belal Hossain, Upazila Secondary Education Officer, and Md Manzur Mia, Chairman, Kapasia Union Parishad, also attended the meeting. .
Harun-or-Rashid, Project Coordinator, presented that under the initiative, 220 selected erosion-affected families would receive Tk. 8,100 each in cash assistance. In addition, 20 extremely poor families would receive Tk. 20,400 each to support the reconstruction of their houses.
Taking part in the discussion, the participants pointed out that river erosion causes more extensive and lasting damage than other disasters. As entire homesteads and cultivable land disappeared into rivers, affected families are left without shelter and livelihoods. That such losses require sustained support beyond emergency assistance.
Referring to the assistance, the chairperson said that although the assistance would not meet the full scale of the needs, it would provide important support to families struggling to recover from erosion. He also stressed that emergency assistance alone cannot address the recurring problem of river erosion and called for stronger and long-term government measures to protect from riverbank erosion and prevent further displacement and loss of land.
